Judith pulled the muffins out of the oven and placed them on the counter. Marlene may have been the first to welcome them with bread, but Judith’s blueberry muffins were delicious, especially when she added the sweet crumbles on top. She had considered shrimp and grits, but these people were from Connecticut; who knew if they had even heard of grits. Muffins were a better bet. Besides, Judith had never even seen the inside of the large old house, despite living across the street for ten years. Maybe the young woman would invite her in and she could take a peek.

She placed the muffins in her round Longaberger basket, covered it with a gingham cloth, and walked across the street. Ringing the doorbell, she tried to see through the tempered glass in the door. It was cut in too many directions, and everything inside was obscured. It was very quiet. After a few moments, she rang again and knocked on the door in case the bell didn’t work. Both of the couple’s cars were parked out front, but no one came to the door. Were they still sleeping? It was nearly 10:00 in the morning. Maybe they had been up late packing. Judith saw a card against the door stop, and she reached down to pick it up and read it. It was from the cable company, noting that they had come by at 8:00 that morning and would return between 12:00 and 2:00 that afternoon. Apparently the couple was gone.
