John 1 and Psalm 119:1–8

Yesterday (10/31) I wrote about spending the first 22 days of November reading through the book of John and Psalm 119. I invited anyone who wanted to read along to join me, regardless of faith, perspective, opinion, or skepticism. Today I read John 1 and the first four verses of Psalm 119, and I’d like to share a few of my own thoughts.

John 1

It’s funny. When I first had the impetus to read both John and Psalm 119, I didn’t really put 2 and 2 together. But as I read the opening of John, it hit me. Numerous preachers and teachers call Psalm 119 the Psalm about “The Word.” Because David spends the entire Psalm talking about God’s Word and its meaning in his life.

And look how John 1 begins:

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
~ John 1;1, ESV

That made me smile. But the first few verses just say “the Word” over and over. What is the Word? Who is the Word? So we have to go looking for clues. Looking at it from a high level, we see that when the writer describes, “the Word,” they use “He” or “Him.” So that answers the first question if we’re going by basic syntax. The Word is a who. Here’s a little about Him:

  • He was in the beginning
  • He was with God
